The Founders
Earl and Derek McLaren are former farmers and pioneers of microbiome research. After 23 years of farming potatoes, the brothers decided to try their hand at a new venture after realizing the potential from a potato processing co-product, potato starch. Sustainable solutions come innately to farmers who have been upcycling co-products for centuries.
In 2002, they purchased a manufacturing facility and began building MSP Starch Products Inc. into a global leader in the starch industry. The business really started to take off after discovering the ancestral story and unique gut health benefits of the potato starch granule – Resistant Starch Type 2 (RS2). It took years to perfect the proprietary process of cleaning and gently drying the delicate starch granules. The outcome was Solnul™, an ingredient with the highest concentration of RS2 and only supplement-grade resistant starch on the market.
Captivated by the ancestral RS2, the brothers started down the path of clinical research light years before the industry trend to validate their belief that resistant starch could have a profound effect on the health of the microbiome. Today Solnul™ is supported by over a decade of human clinical and scientific research and employs a Chief Scientific Officer to oversee the product’s future research developments.
